During an assessment under our new approach
Date of Assessment: 01 October to 13 November 2025. The Royd is a residential care home providing support to people with mental health needs. The service comprised of 3 houses; one which was for more independent living and the other 2 for individuals requiring more support. These 2 houses were linked internally. At the time of the inspection the service was providing support to 13 adults. Not everyone who used the service received personal care. CQC only inspects where people receive a regulated activity of personal care. This is to help with tasks related to personal hygiene and eating. Where they do, we also consider any wider social care provided. At the time of the inspection, 3 people were in receipt of regulated activity.
This inspection took place due to the age of the rating. A comprehensive inspection covering the 5 key questions, safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led was carried out.
Overall, we found that the provider’s governance and oversight were not sufficiently robust and led to delays in identifying and addressing safety concerns, including issues with fire doors, missing window restrictors and rubbish disposal. These matters had been raised by the registered manager to the provider, but action was not always taken promptly which increased potential risks for people.
However, despite these concerns, staff and managers showed genuine commitment to the people they supported. They knew individuals well, demonstrated compassion in their work, and created a caring atmosphere within the service. The provider responded positively to feedback during the inspection and began taking steps to strengthen governance processes and address the concerns we identified.
The provider was in breach of the legal regulations relating to governance and oversight. In instances where CQC has begun a process of regulatory action, we may publish this information on our website after any representations and/or appeals have been concluded, if the action has been taken forward.
